Movement

Sifu Russell Barbara is a disciple of Grandmaster Henry Moy and teaches a wide array of internal and external martial arts that can meet the goals of all levels of fitness and ability.

Internal Martial Arts

Some martial arts, such as qigong, tai chi, and ba gua, focus on internal cultivation through slow or deliberate movement along with breathing exercises and meditation. These are known as internal martial arts or soft styles. These practices tend to be low or no impact and can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and cultivate better overall health. Classes begin with gentle warm-up and flexibility exercises and continue with gentle movement and standing meditation exercises, finishing with tai chi and ba gua walking. These techniques are beneficial to young and old and can be taught to students of all levels of health and athletic ability.

External Martial Arts

Sifu Russell Barbara has spent two decades studying traditional Chinese martial arts under Sifu Henry Moy, including the Yip Man/Moy Yat lineage Ving Tsun (known also as Wing Chun) and Sil Lum, or southern Shaolin kungfu as well as weapons such as the gwun (long pole), the do (Chinese saber), and xin (Shaolin fan). Classes begin with warm-ups and stretching and include study of forms, isolated hand and leg techniques, punching and kicking pads, and San Sau, controlled and cooperative partner drills that build strength, confidence, and endurance. External Martial Arts classes are more physically demanding but can be tailored to fit your specific needs and limitations.
